Twenty-six feng shui changes you can make this weekend.
Most feng shui guides start with theory. We're going to start with a list.
Below are twenty-six universally-safe changes you can make to your home in one weekend. Nothing here needs a compass, a Kua number, new furniture, or money. Some take five minutes. The longest takes an afternoon.
We've grouped them by room, so you can walk through the home with the list in your hand and tick things off.
If you do all twenty-six, your home will feel different by Monday. We do not say this lightly. The effects of declutter, light, command position, and clean surfaces are some of the best-documented in environmental psychology, and most of them are on this list.
At the front door (6 changes).
The front door is the mouth of qi. In design terms, it is the first six feet that set the tone of the whole home.
1. Open the door fully. Push it back as far as the hinge allows. If something stops it (a shoe rack, a bag, a stack of post), move that thing somewhere else. The door should swing without effort.
2. Replace any dead bulb in the entrance. All of them. Today.
3. Clear shoes off the floor. Put them in a closed container, in a closet, or anywhere out of the line of sight from the door.
4. Test the doorbell. If it does not work, fix it. A dead doorbell is a small thing that the household notices a little every day.
5. Hang one thing at eye-height on the wall facing the door. A small picture you actually like. A mirror is not recommended here in most schools.
6. Sweep or vacuum the threshold. Inside and out. Every other recommendation on this list is downstream of how clean your threshold is.
In the kitchen (4 changes).
The stove and the sink are the two most consequential objects in the kitchen.
7. Clean every burner on the stove. Even the back ones. Especially the back ones. The traditional reading puts the stove at the centre of the wealth chain; the modern reading is simpler (a clean stove makes you cook more).
8. Clear the sink before bed every night this weekend. Try it. See what it does to the morning.
9. Throw out any cracked or chipped cup, plate, or bowl. Broken means stuck in the tradition; in modern psychology, broken means low-grade cognitive load every time you reach for it.
10. Move the kitchen bin out of the line of sight from the cook's position. The cook should not be looking at rubbish while they work.
In the bedroom (5 changes).
The bedroom carries more weight than any other room in the home. You spend a third of your life in it, with your guard down.
11. Move the bed so that from where you sleep, you can see the door without turning your head. The classical name is command position. The modern name is reduced vigilance load.
12. Push the bed against a wall and add a real headboard. A bed with no headboard floating in the middle of a room is unmoored.
13. Remove or cover any large mirror that reflects you while you sleep. Movement in your peripheral vision while half-asleep keeps the nervous system alert. Whatever you call this rule, it works.
14. Take the TV off the bedroom wall. Or at least put a cloth over it at night.
15. Put a small plant in the room. Not a cactus. Something soft-leaved, like a peace lily, a small pothos, or a snake plant. Real, not silk.
In the living room (3 changes).
16. Pull the heaviest piece of furniture six inches away from the wall it currently leans against. Let air circulate behind it. You will notice the room within an hour.
17. Add one warm light source below eye height. A table lamp, a floor lamp, a candle. The overhead light is doing too much work.
18. Open every window in the room for fifteen minutes. Even in winter. Cross-ventilate. The improvement in air quality is measurable.
At your workspace (3 changes).
If you work from home, the desk position matters as much as the bed.
19. Move the desk so you are not sitting with your back to the door. Same command-position principle as the bedroom.
20. Remove anything sharp from above your head at the desk. A shelf with edges. A heavy frame. A swing-arm lamp that always feels in the way.
21. Add one plant within arm's reach. It changes the air quality, the visual rhythm, and the sense of being in a room rather than a cubicle.
In every room (5 changes).
These are the universally-safe moves the practice has converged on across schools.
22. Throw out three things tonight that you have been meaning to deal with. Anything. The threshold for "three" lowers the resistance to "any".
23. Open every window in the home for ten minutes once a day this weekend. Stale air is the most under-rated feng shui problem.
24. Tidy the wallet, the inbox, and the bedside table. All three. They are the personal versions of the front door, the kitchen, and the bedroom.
25. Fix one broken thing. The squeaky hinge. The wobbly chair. The lightbulb you've been meaning to swap for the bright one. One thing.
26. Sit in the centre of every room for one minute, with your eyes closed. Notice what the room sounds like, smells like, feels like. This is the diagnostic step. You will know something is wrong in three of the rooms. Those three are next weekend's project.
What to expect.
You will sleep better in the bedroom you moved the bed in.
You will cook more in the kitchen you cleaned the stove in.
You will read more in the living room you added a warm lamp to.
You will think more clearly at the desk you turned to face the door.
None of these are mystical. All of them are the parts of feng shui that survived the migration into modern environmental design. The mystical layer comes later.
